I have started a new game regardless, though I'm not very far in. This is what I've done, but UP and z seem to be ignored, and things simply progress as though I'd only pressed the x button. I'm told that the way to delete save files in game is to press UP + Select + B, which I can only assume means UP + x + z on the keyboard.
